|
|
Hi I've Core 2 Duo processor with Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 matherboard. I've tried to instal serveral Linux distribution (Red Hat 9, Fedora 5, Suse 10, Mandriva 2006), but all of them had problems finding my cd-rom. As described in matherboard manual, ATA chanel is connected to GIGABYTE SATA2 RAID controller and then by PCI Express bus to Intel ICH8. My cd-rom is ATA and I think the problem is in GIGABYTE SATA2 controller. On Gigabytes official site there are no drivers for any Linux distribution. Does Gentoo have that driver or can you offer something else? Thank you! |

It's actually a problem with the JMicron PATA controller not being recognized by the LiveCD (the driver for it became available in linux-2.6.18 and the gentoo livecd uses a 2.6.17-series kernel).
Check out kerneloftruth's livecd at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-494387-highlight-.html. |

I see this theme is well discussed. Thank you very much. Although it is strange that there's nothing sad about Jmicron in motherboards manual. |

I think the major motherboard manufacturers and OEMs just assume everyone will be using Windows. As far as they're concerned, it seems that as long as they provide Windows driver support, it doesn't really matter if they divulge any other specifics like what third-party controllers are used in the product.
It's a shame, really. Would've saved some of us a lot of time =/. |
