I recently installed Gentoo 2006.1 - and i always have a small amount of traffic being used.
I used wireshark to capture some of this traffic, and i got about 15000 ARP packets in one and a half minutes.
I'm not sure if this matters or not, but my network usage is often showing 20-30% even when i have gaim and skype shut. It always goes completely dead when I turn off my cable modem.

Anyone know why this is or how I can investigate further.. or better, just stop it happening? I have a feeling this is contributing to my monthly usage cap..

Where are they coming from? Are they from the ISP or some other guy in your LAN trying to fool you?

dhcpcd-2 does ARP automatically and you may have encounted a bug in it.
dhcpcd-3 does not and it's ARP is much more reliable.

So if you're using dhcpcd on the link, tru upgrading.
