After my HP PSC 1210 deceased, I went out and bought me a brand new HP Deskjet F370, which - except from the color - looks just like the old one.

But where the PSC 1210 worked allmost out of the box, Im having trouble getting this new one to scan. Printing works perfectly.

The sane-project homepage states, that "Most HP OfficeJet, LaserJet, Photosmart, PSC (Printer/Scanner/Copier), and some Photosmart multi-function peripherals" works with hpaio "Distributed with the HP Linux Imaging and Printing Project (hplip)".

On hplip.sourceforge.net I find the HP Deskjet 370 on the "Supported Devices > Color Inkjet All-in-Ones" - list.

I emerged hplip and sane-backends, and edited /etc/sane.d/dll.conf to include only hpaio.

sane-find-scanner gives me:
# sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
# result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
# scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

# No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
# you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0 [HP], product=0x5511 [Deskjet F300 series]) at libusb:003:002
# Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
# SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

# Not checking for parallel port scanners.

# Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
# can't be detected by this program.

NOW COMES THE TROUBLE:

scanimage -L:

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

Kooka and openoffice are not cooperative either. :-(
[/b]

I hope someone can help - the response "dont by this product" is somehow not applicable

I just got my hp F380 to work by using the following.

first check that scanner is in your use flags when emerging hplip. ie
Code:
$ emerge -pv hplip

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R   ] net-print/hplip-1.6.10  USE="X ppds scanner -foomaticdb -qt3 -snmp" 0 kB

then add hpaio to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

make sure hplip is running (more importantly it should start hpssd)
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/hplip start

then test... should look something like the following.
Code:

$ scanimage -L
device `hpaio:/usb/Deskjet_F300_series?serial=CN69RGM3H504KH' is a hp Deskjet_F300_series multi-function peripheral

After this scanning worked for me...

Cheers
Andrew

Thanks a million

The scanner use-flag had gone missing - where it went, I cannot say.

Now, Im scanning away!

The hplip package is nice in that it comes with a sort of installation utility. I have an HP F380, so I emerged hplip with all the USE flags on (make sure you install hplip >1.0 because IIRC, anything less doesn't support the F300-series AIOs).

I then did the following:
Code:
# for i in cupsd hplip ; do /etc/init.d/$i start ; rc-update add $i default ; done
# hp-setup

A configuration utility came up, found my printer, and set everything up for me.

I was actually quite surprised. My scanner and printer have been working flawlessly after that. Maybe I was just lucky, but I suggest that you at least try to do the same.
