Gentoo on Sony PSP... is now possible???

i love gentoo... and i love my psp... what are you thinkin about... is now possible?... in a nearby future??

As you can see from the web page you posted yourself, it is not possible at all, and I think not in near future if ever. It is not that simple, actually. But interesting stuff still

The PSP is essentially a toy. It can't run the usual Linux userland and kernels you're accustomed to on x86... and barely anything is known about the device.

As it stands now, there are no plans to support this device in the near, or even distant future.

sony PSone and sony PSP are mips noMMU machine

this means you can't use linux or netbsd, and you have to use uClinux, or other MMU-less OS

PSone is a machine without I/O, it has got 2 PAD/MEMORYCARD, a PAL/NTSC port, stop

PSP is more equipped, and it has got a serial port (to be hacked to be used as UART RS232)

it is a more interesting little-endian MIPS machine, it has been designed to make you be a game player, but may be an interesting piece of hw only if you have it and you want to study an embedded OS

hacking it may make you better 'cause you may want to demostrate you are not only a stupid game player, but ...

... personally i've bought a $50 MC68332-board (motorola 68k cpu family) to study the development&C of an embedded system

with $100 i could buy an ARM7 board, with IDE, USB, ethernet, ecc ecc and documentation (schematic + firmware doc, + firmware source, ecc ecc)

the PSP in italy costs 250 euro, it should be an expensive (and not documented) dev board

there could be some ssh port in the future...that would be great
another toy is the nitendo ds...that has ssh

The problem is, most of the apps one would normally run on such a device, require things like mmap to work.

mmap needs an MMU, which the PSP doesn't have. Which rules out Linux entirely (but not ÂµCLinux), and most useful applications such as X.
