I've added zugaina overlay with layman for various cute programs, and at some point later started to compile kde with emerge kde-meta. First I did emerge --fetchonly kde-meta, which downloaded 309 packages, so I thought it'll be able to build offline.

However, at some point during the build, the thing wanted qconf-cvs from zugaina! And that wants qt4, which it doesn't know how to build; and qt4 wants dbus-1. So I ended up doing an emerge =qt-4.2.2 first, which needed dbus-1, while I only had dbus-0.9 from 2006.1 install. Well, I unmerged the old dbus and got the new one. Whether it broke hal from GRP install remains to be seen when KDE builds completely...

I'm failry new to the emerge process, so I wonder, what's the state of those ebuilds -- will I find out, after a few days of compiling, that the spurious qconf-cvs derailed my kde-3.5.5 build?

How do I get kde-4 separate and alongside kde-3.5 so that each is stable and correctly installed?

Why does emerge kde-meta find that it needs qconf-cvs from zugaina overlay when that's available? And why then does that qconf-cvs depend on qt-4 but can't emerge it on its own?

Is it OK to have dbus-1 with the HAL install from 2006.1? Why does qt-4.2.2 depend on dbus-1, rejecting dbus-0.9? Why did emerge -C dbus didn't tell me anything about hal depending on it in 2006.1?

Cheers,
Alexy

Moved from Desktop Environments to Unsupported Software as it seems to be an overlay-related issue.
