Hi All

I'm using grip now to rip my CDs, however it seems it cannot make mp3s with a variable bit rate

Is there a a program that can do this ?

Thanks a lot

You can use lame with grip, just configure the encoder to configure the flags passed to lame, specifically -v. See "man lame" for more info.

Personally, I've found the hydrogenaudio.org guys to be an excellent resource for all things audio.

See the wiki's lame page for their recommended settings for use with lame.

I've been using media-sound/rubyripper instead of grip since it is more configurable and comes very close to Exact Audio Copy's security.

HTH,

Can't directly edit or rip the audio CD track, import the audio CD track to PC, any Mp3 editing/ converting software will be of use, suggests FlexiMusic Wave Editor. Using "Save As" command convert and save the audio CD track to Mp3 file format. While using "Save As" command, it will ask for change in bit rate where you can change the bit rate of Mp3 files of your choice. To save the file as Mp3, need to install a separate command line Mp3 encoder/ decoder. Lame win 32 will be of use.

Using lame with variable bit rate is quite easy:

Code:

lame --r3mix inputfile outputfile

Into the r3mix option are included some filters and a variable bit rate. The quality is seems quite good for me. I'm using this option by default.

For ripping CDs I use RipperX. It's only a frontend for lame and cdparanoia. But in this programm you can't select the r3mix option. So I edit the config file by myself.

~/.ripperXrc:

...
Encoder::extraOptions = --r3mix
Encoder::fullCommand = lame --r3mix
...

Thanks I try this out.

Have you asked at sourceforge to add this feature?

Looks nice, need cddb;

Why are there no links in the gnome menu for good software? This ebuild also don*t add a gnome item to the gnome-menu! :cry:

No, this feature exists in lame for many years.
