|
|
Hi, I'm trying to get remote X running.
So, I have a home pc running gentoo linux.
And at school I have Xming installed.
I've followed the 'first start' guide at: http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Xming
Doesn't work.. I fill in my home IP adress and select XDMCP, xdm is running on the host machine(the computer at home) and I have a running X server there also, but I can't connect... even when I select 'use indirect connect' I can't connect. I think I need it since the connection from school to the internet isn't a direct one. Same as the linux pc at home which is in a DMZ.It just gives me the Xming root X screen, with nothing on it.
I can't use SSH through putty in Xming, same result.. Just a root X screen with nothing on it and I can't click anything. But with just putty I can connect, log in and issue commands.. I've no idea why it isn't working.. I think I don't understand how the X server works, how it's supposed to be configured, what command I should use to initiate a program on Xming.
What I wan't to do is simple: connect to my home pc, get KDM to log in and get a KDE Desktop environment.
Anybody have any ideas??
Thanks in advance
Edit: when trying to use Putty the root screen appears, and then dies on me. _________________ Calling atheism a religion, is like calling bald a haircolour. |

Have you configured the XDMCP for remote logins? By default it is disabled. I am using gdm and it works fine but I am not sure of the config steps for xdm or kdm but it should be something similar.
If you are using ssh you still need to start an application. So if you ssh into the server you will need to run a command like 'xterm' should open an xterm onto the window. Of course, if you doing it as one window rather than multiple windows you will need to start a desktop manager such as gnome or kde. _________________ AMD 64 3500+, 2Gb RAM DDR400, 2 x 180Gb SATA, 256Mb Nvidia |
