okay I did take a look at the instructions on the gentoo site.

But it doesn't say what to expect when you type in etc-update

cdimage linux # etc-update
Scanning for Configuration files...
Exiting: No files to work on!

Now is this what I want to see? or is this an error. I have installed gentoo 5 times now, and quite frankley getting tired not knowing what exactly is going wrong when I get kernel panic. I didn't write down Kernel panic error. So if this is what I want to see I will be back on telling what it was to fix that :P

Sorry, this is not an error. I, too, got frightened the first time I saw that message, but it is actually just telling you that it has finished its job...

I would suggest to the dev-team that they changed the "I'm finished, everything's OK"-message to something a little less, uhm what do you say, exclamating... (e.g. removing the exclamation mark or simply printing "Done" or something).

This message from etc-update is not an error. It simply means that there are no configuration files to work with. If there were some files you would get a list of them on the screen.

The cause of kernel panics are hard to determine. In my case it was ACPI that caused them. My only recommendation is that you try different kernels to see which one works best for your system and once you have a stable and working system investigate the cause of problems. HTH.
