xmame quit reverts to kdm login screen

Just installed gentoo with kde 3, activated xdm with kdm as the default, and then compiled xmame 0.67.2 with dga support.

xmame runs fine, switches resolution properly and goes to fullscreen. however, when i quit xmame -- by pusing escape -- the screen gets distorted for a second and then pops back up to the kdm session -- essentially logging me out of my kde session.

this doesn't happen if i run xmame in windowed mode.

i feel like i must be missing something obvious. thoughts?
