Ok, this one has me at ends. I emerged vmware-server and vmware-server-console according to the instuctions here: http://diaryproducts.net/about/operating_systems/unix/installing_vmware_server_on_gentoo_linux_part_3 (thanks to the author for the howto btw). But I seem to be roadblocked:

pepper lib # vmware-server-console
/opt/vmware/server/console/lib/bin/vmware-server-console: /opt/vmware/server/console/lib/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/opt/vmware/server/console/lib/bin/vmware-server-console: /opt/vmware/server/console/lib/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/opt/vmware/server/console/lib/bin/vmware-server-console: /opt/vmware/server/console/lib/lib/libpng12.so.0/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)

I'm not able to get this up and rolling, not matter what I try. I've tried some of the fixed mentioned here:
http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?messageID=484981

None of them have been helpful.

cp /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0 /usr/lib/vmware/lib/libpng12.so.0/

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.3:$LD_PRELOAD vmware-server-console just leads to:

pepper lib # LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.3:$LD_PRELOAD vmware-server-console
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.3' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

Has anyone had any luck getting this working? I could use some help.

Thanks!

Try renaming /opt/vmware/server/console/lib/lib/libpng12.so.0/ to something else (like libpng12.so.0.old) so that vmware will use /usr/lib/libpng12.so instead of its own.

I had exactly the same problem and your suggestion worked, the console seems to take longer than usual to start now, but it works perfectly.
