PS3 Gentoo on USB Drive

Is it possible to install Gentoo (or any other flavor of linux, I suppose) onto an external USB drive rather than partitioning the main drive on a PS3?

installing onto a USB key should be no problem

but, can you boot a PS3 from USB?

Should be possbile if you fixup a bootloader that does that for you. There is a Gentoo bootloader around that allows for booting from cd/dvd only, I guess it could be modified to boot from USB.
