Hi, I wanted to recently install mplayer on my machine which has no X. Do you guys know why it's asking me to install gtk+ as a dependency? Here is the output from the emerge command:

I guess this is one of those flaws in portage I'll just ignore it for now

Try emerge -pvt mplayer, the tree view should make it more obvious exactly why GTK+ is required. My guess is it's because of RealPlayer, via the real USE flag, since I don't see -X on its ebuild in your output and I know RealPlayer has a GTK UI.

Oh, I guess you got it 
edit:
media-video/realplayer-10.0.8 doesn't have the X USE flag. media-video/realplayer-10.0.8-r1 does (so you could have X disabled). If you want to use that version (if you really need Realplayer), you can use the latest version adding media-video/realplayer into /etc/portage/package.keywords. |

Interesting, I'll just disable that flag since I don't really need it for now anyways
