Hi people,

Having downloaded the "live" CD image overnight, I am preparing to install on my newly built PC later this evening.
Foxconn 975X7AB Mainboard
Intel E6400 Core-Duo
1Gb Corsair 667Mhz in twinx mode
Nvidia PCIx 7600GT 256Mb
250Gb Seagate SATA 7200.10
NEC DWD-RW
generic PS/2 keyboard
Trust gaming mouse USB GM-4200

I have downloaded the i686 live version, I hope this is ok.

A few things that concern me, being the noob I am.
I already have XP installed, on a partition of 150Gb, the remaing part of the drive is unformatted.
Will the install see this space and allow me to format it ext2/3 etc?
Will grub/lilo be upset by this being a SATA drive?
Will the USB mouse present problems?
The network chip appears to be a Dual GbE LAN with Marvell 88E8056 item, with one disabled in bios. Will this be automatically recognised, or will I have to struggle with finding drivers like my last PC (broadcom 4400)?
Will ALSA work this time?

Any pitfalls to watch for, or advice welcome.

Hi and welcome to Gentoo! (Well, almost anyway  )

Do not use the installer. Do not use the installer. Also, do not use the installer. It is still experimental and is designed to help automate the installation process of deploying multiple systems, not to replace the manual installation process. You must understand the manual installation process if you're going to understand Gentoo.

See the Gentoo-wiki for recommended CFLAGS. Support is fine. If you want a 32bit system, use the x86 installation process. If you want 64 bit, then use the amd64 (even though you have Intel... AMD got there first so they get the credit) installation process.

Will work fine. Follow the Gentoo NVIDIA guide.

Not a problem... DON'T USE THE INSTALLER. Follow the handbook and you'll have no problems. Here's a dual-booting guide.

No.

No. I suggest the mouse guide on gentoo-wiki.

I have Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 15) which works perfectly with the sky2 driver in kernel.

If you follow the guide you'll probably have no problems. What soundcard?

Also, don't use the installer.

HTH,

I suggest you to do this for your installation :

-Install a minimum system and make sure that your USB is working.
-Compile yourself your kernel...make menuconfig is the best :)
-Install ALSA
-Install X.ORG and after that your desktop (KDE,Gnome,XFCE,Flushbox )etc..
-Use the open source driver nv for your video card.
-After that, you can make a Stage 5 backup : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-534039.html
-Finally, install the Nvidia 3D driver if you want.

Have a good time :)
