I have a telephone landline in my room.
I also have a gentoo PC in that same room with a wireless card and connection to ADSL internet.

I have a wireless laptop that connects to my PC as a move around the house.

the problem: I can't hear the phone ringing in my room, when I'm in a different room of the house !
the solution: I often carry my laptop with me to the other rooms (e.g. TV room).
I'd like to tunnel the telephone ring sound over the wireless connection to hear it at the other rooms (on my laptop) !

any idea how to do this?

thanks,
Shane

PS my gentoo PC does not have a modem... so I can't plug the phone-line into my computer :(
the solution has to be "audio" related

It'd be a waste of money.
my mobile contract has just finished, and i'd be getting another one soon.
meanwhile I'm dependent on this landline......
If I wanna spend 20 or 30 pounds on a cordless phone... i'd get myself a skype-in/out account... or just a temporary sim-card, both would be cheaper than the cordless phone.

isn't it just possible to tunnel the raw audio data (from the card) over ssh to my laptop and play it out with mplayer ?

I don't know how to do the first part.... googled for tunneling /dev/dsp, but didn't get anything....

arecord requires me to give it a filename to save the data in... if i could only avoid the file, and ask it to dump to console (which would be tunneled over SSH) and played using aplay at the other end, it would be sufficient.

So, record the telephone (or anything in the room) using a mic, tunneling the output to another machine and play it in realtime? Well, I suppose it could be done.

Code:
arecord - | ssh laptop aplay -

I wasn't sure if that type of command-line would work, but it did :)

YAY....... problem solved.

despite the silliness I think it's an excellent survelence idea....
in particular, if you pipe the arecord through some audio analyzing software before tunneling it over ssh, it'd be awesome.
I think i should patent this.

Can you imagine how much money someone can make with this type of software in these days?
the US security level jumps from yellow to orange, and the stock price of this software would triple.
