I'm having strange issues with firefox and thunderbird.
When I run firefox, I get:

No running windows found
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib64/nsbrowser/plugins/libvlcplugin.so [libdbus-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

And it stays hanging there. I was already getting those messages before, and there were other too abou the plugins being loaded (flash, java, etc). Now I don't know what to do to make it work.
And when I run thunderbird:

I already removed the .thunderbird and .mozilla dirs, and the problems persist. What now?

From the error you get when loading Firefox, have you tried re-emerging dbus and firefox?

Man, I did that, and only then I saw the message that I MUST execute revdep-rebuild.
Revdep-rebuild did the trick. Everything is working now.

To avoid similar problems in the future, I strongly suggest using ELOG. I have set up ELOG to email me the postinst/warn messages from emerges, and have headed off many many problems because of it. i think the problem is openldap. running revdep-rebuild told me a bunch of libraries owned by openldap had broken links, but updating openldap didn't replace those libraries (oddly enough, the emerge tells me that the old libraries won't be removed, and i should run revdep-rebuild. so i get stuck in a loop). so here's what i do:
1. emerge openldap
2. the emerge tells you that it hasn't deleted two openldap libraries, and to run revdep-rebuild
3. revdep-rebuild tells me those libraries are broken, and tells me to emerge openldap.
4. see step 1.
when i re-emerged openldap, thunderbird started normally, without a reboot.
obviously, though, the point of revdep-rebuild is to rebuild packages linked against libraries that no longer exist, so it should be reasonable to delete old libraries (from a prior package) during an emerge. since openldap isn't a slot package, this should be the normal function.
developers: is this the correct reading of the situation? can somebody else confirm that re-emerging openldap allows thunderbird to run?
