|

After I have installed / configured my first gentoo, I love it
Now, I'm going to install it to my server, but this time, I can't use the liveCd to install, as my (home) server is working, I don't want it to offline too long. Hence I'd like to install from an exisiting setup.
However, I don't find any info for this kind of setup...
IMO, is it possible to do so?
Code: |
1. mkdir /mnt/gentoo
2. mount the partition to /mnt/gentoo
3. mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
4. mount the partition to /mnt/gentoo/boot
5. cd /mnt/gentoo
6. tar xjpvf /somewhere/stage1.*bz
7. mount -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc
8. cp /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/
9. chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
10. env-update
11. source /etc/profile
...... and following the remaining step in the installation guide.

If I haven't anything missed, after configuring grub, and reboot,
I will change my existing RH system to Gentoo, right?
At this point, I still have a small question, in my present config,
My current configuration has used up nearly all the partition, among them,
I have one /boot, /var, /tmp, etc.
Is it ok to mount --bind these dirs to /mnt/gentoo/..., and then chroot.
Or there is any other better method for my situation? |

Do you want to dual boot gentoo with redhat or completly erase redhat.
I'm under the impression that you want to completly erase and replace with gentoo with the minimal down time.
If so you would be better to setup a gentoo on a similar system than make an image and apply over your server. |

I'm interested in this too (well actually, my friend is).. He currently has a trashed redhat box and I'm trying to get him to put gentoo on it. We're about to try using a slackware boot disk (bare.i) to get to the cd, but other than that, the cd-rom drive isn't able to boot off of cds, and this is the only box of its type (P166, 2Gb HD+1Gb HD) at his house.
I don't see how it would be possible to chroot into itself, while wiping the redhat junk. |

Right, my intention is to use Gentoo to replace my RH completely.
But just wonder what is the most elegant way to do so.
As I would, to install Gentoo, from stage1, my pretty old box is using K6-2 300, with ~512M. If I just shutdown and boot with LiveCD (the most common way), the turnover time will be extremely long.
That is not affordable |

if you have a spare partition installation is quite easy. You don't need a livecd - just grab a tarball with wget.
You shouldn't experience any problems if you do it the way you described yourself.

there should be a delete button on the upper right corner of your post!
uhm! I'm not sure but that may just apply to your last post. So you probably have to delete a dub just after posting it. |
