Hi... I have the following problem
I boot my gentoo in with the kernel parameter "vga=4" [80x30] no framebuffer.
It works fine... I mean I get the 80x30 console... but when I start X and switch back to the text console, i get a 80x25 + 5 rows OFFSCREEN...
I tried different consolefonts... I even tried different "vga=" options... with the same result.

The kernel is vanilla-2.6.20_rc5. I have suport for "Video mode selection support".

I have a P4 core2 duo + nVidia 7300GT videocard...

Any ideeas?

Have you tried using the VESA framebuffer instead of the SVGA mode console?

The vesafb driver is compatable with the nvidia binary drivers and should give you the nice resolution in the console. Did you want to try that and see if it still gives you the trouble?

If you are absolutly against using framebuffer. There is an svgamode command ( I have not used it in a long long long time ) that should allow you to reset the mode of the console. But it would be annoying to have to do it everytime you exit X.org.

P.S. That is alot of USE flags!

I forgot to mention that if I run "setfont" console gets back to normal. But I don't want to do that.

I dont't want framebuffer. just svga console.
This happened to me a while ago... on another pc... with a ATI Radeon.
Same behaviour.
On my older PC this did not happen...
Don't know why... Perhaps is videocard related... or driver related...

PS: theese are my real USE flags...

I hate to bump an older thread, but I too am having the same problem, except with an 80x50 textmode console. The system boots ok, but when I switch back from an X session, the prompt text appears to overlap as though it draws once, and then again half a line higher for a 'one-and-a-half' character vertical effect. typing setfont alt-8x8 fixes it but I must do this each time I switch from X.. Up till now, I have been masking nvidia-drivers newer than 9631 to avoid this but I know this wont' last forever. ..and this bug is still present in the 9755 drivers.

I know, I know.. I should go post this on nvnews.
