Hi all, I have no idea what i've done, but I appear to have mashed KDE somehow....

I get the KDM Login Screen, login, the screen goes black, then boots me back to KDM....

Where are the log files for KDM / KDE so I can work out exactly what the hell I mashed, so I can try and put it right. Unfortunately, this is the only GUI I have on my system at the moment, though I think i'm going to emerge something small like FluxBox so I can at least use the system.

Any help is appretiated on this.

Thanks in advanced.

Jay

Same here,

Looking into it. I can get into a KDE session as root, but not as a user.

UPDATE:

I haven't given root access to KDE, so i wouldn't know about that, and i'm the only other user on the system

I've just emerged Fluxbox, and this is doing exactly the same, so, i'm now emerging GDM, it could be a KDM issue?

I'll update with how it goes once GDM is emerged...

Jay.

K, I'm back in. I tried a couple things, but the following items worked for me...

1: As root, I went to /home/username and rm-rf'd .k* (look before you leap with ls -lA)
2: Removed stale "startkde" from my users .xinitrc

Rebooted for good measure.

Hi Frank,

i don't quite follow what you mean by "rm-rf'd .k*"

also, the .xinitrc file doesn't appear to be in my users directory....

the .k* files/folders I have are as follows...

.kde3.5 (dir)
.kde (link to .kde3.5)
.kderc (file)
.kinorc (file)

Emerged GDM....

when I try and login, I get an error messeage:

Quote:
GDM could not write to your authorization file. This could mean that you are out of disk space or that your home directory could not be opened for writing. In any case, it is not possible to log in. Please contact your system administrator

if I try and log in with Root, I can succesfully log in....

i have a feeling.... that the fact that I have 10GB in the Roots trash can, could be a rather large issue here....

this would be due to the fact i've been moving files around clearing up a spare drive to reformat.... this drive is a 250GB drive... bigger than the rest of the drives in my system put together.....

emptying the trash appears to have fixed the issue (few)

is there anyway of emptying the trash from KDE in the kernel? for instance, if i'm a muppet again, and can't get to the GUI, how do I empty it?

Thanks for your help anyway.

Jay.

do the rm -rf /home/${USERNAME}/.k* thing. That would remove your KDE stuff, including the trashbin. You'd also want to remove GDM, which is also wasting space on your hard drive, and run emerge -av depclean to get all the garbage out of your system. Remember to run revdep-rebuild afterwards and you'll be set. also, post the output of

Code:

df -h

so I can see how much free space you've got. Also make sure your permissions are correct.

thanks sonicbhoc,

i've managed to sort it now, the main issue was that i've been clearing my 250GB drive to install Gentoo onto there, and in the meantime am stuck with a 40GB drive & 2 80GB drives, all of which with Data on... I should have known that 25GB of music probably wasn't a good idea on a 40GB drive but i've almost cleared enough space to set Gentoo onto the 250GB drive now.

Thanks all for your help.
