Hi All,

I just spotted an interesting article on slashdot...

I tend to use Gentoo for servers, both for my own business and my customers. I have only made one attempt to install Gentoo using the Universal install CD and I didn't like the package management interface. I started again with the minimal install CD.

However, if Gentoo would like to target a wider marketplace then this might offer a satisfactory way forward. Have a look at the bottom image - it shows how CNR will integrate with Ubuntu.

Perhaps the same approach will work for Gentoo/portage and give Gentoo a Graphical package management tool with 5 years development behind it.

Perhaps I am talking crock :-)

Best Regards, Paul.

Ad supported package management. Brilliant.

Linspire should have died off at the Lindows controversy. I hope for the future of Linux that this is never implemented.

If people are OK with ads, I don't see a problem. Linspire actually sounds like a decent alternative to Windows if it works as well as I've read.

FX: Arrrgghhh! I hadn't spotted this.

I also thought that this was a genuine open source project being opened up by Linspire. It's called not reading things properly. Ho Hum.

My mistake.

Best Regards, Paul.

it gets better than just ad-supported, I do have Linspire five 0 ( it was free, thought i'd see what its like)

the CNR app is a bit... hmm crap....

I mean, in terms of installing apps etc its a very good program and great idea, however did you notice on the top screen shot there is "Star Office 8" for $69.99 - as i recall in Linspire, there was no Open office, so I was stick with 1.4 (I think) and you had to PAY to get the OOo 2 release.... is this what open source was meant for? - i think not.

for this reason, and also the fact that lets face it 20,000 packages, my "emerge --sync" when I run it (about once or twice a week) updates more packages than that, its not alot, really, and its way too commercialised for my liking, I will not ever use a system that has CNR on it, and i hope to god (or the developers) that it never hits Gentoo....

Jay

EDIT: I no longer use Linspire, and would never advise anyone to use it!
