Hi there,

my machine from lspci, reports itself as having a:
"VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 945G/GZ Express Integrated Graphics Controller"

I cannot get this working at all.

The symptoms are:
- when starting /etc/init.d/xdm (which starts gdm) I just get a grey screen and a mouse curser that can be moved... but nothing more.
- when starting "startx" I get:

--8<--
(EE) I810(0): unknown reason for exception
(EE) I810(0): cannot continue
(EE) I810(0): VBE initialization failed.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
--8<--

This was after dropping the resolution of the screen down in the xorg.conf file.

My xorg.conf is currently set to use the "** Intel i810 (generic) [i810]" driver, which i selected from `xorgconfigure`.

Please help me, I cannot use this machine without a windowmanager (I am a developer) and am unsure where to go next (I have had a good look on the forums etc).

(As a side note i was previously using the vesa driver, this also showed a grey screen, i switched to i810 as a result of forum searching but to no avail).

Thanks very much for any help anyone can try and give me,

jk

It sounds like you are looking at a vanilla X11 install. From your post you don't mention which window manager you chose to emerge after X11. Usually people choose KDE or Gnome. For something lightweight you might try openbox or xfce. Once you have a window manager emerged, be sure to select it in the Session list in GDM at the login screen.
