No KDE system sounds on new x86_64 system [SOLVED]

I am busy cloning my x86 system onto a x86_64 one running a Core2Duo. I have installed KDE 3.5.6 and everything seems to work as normal except for the sound. Alsa loads and you can play wav files with aplay. When I start KDE, ARTS initialises as usual but kmix opens with a blank window and says it cannot find a mixer. No system sounds are produced either. Noatun, however, will play an mp3 quite happily, so it seems the problem is with KDE. Anyone got an idea about this?

Ok problem solved.

It seems the alsa use flag is not set automatically which seems to happen on x86 arch. I recompiled kdemultimedia and amarok with alsa and some other useful-looking flags set. I then could not logon until I had deleted all those socket files that get linked from .kde to /tmp. Once I had done that, I could logon and KDE sounds and kmix worked.
