My parents just got internet (ASDL) and I am helping them upgrade
there old computer so they can use it.
But the computer is old Pentium MMX 200 MHz running Windows 95.
They have very limmited use, card game mustly.
Now they need a www browser and maybe a email and news reader.
So I thinking of installing linux on it, this will also protect them aginst virus.
So I want a small and fast desktop system.
Should I use gentoo for this or would another distribution be better ?
Browsing the web I have found this related links.
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
http://www.ltsp.org/
Now there is a gnome package that emerges a gnome desktop.
Could we not make a damn-small-desktop package that emeges all packades that we
need in a small desktop ? We could copy the package selection from http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
This would make is easy to install gentoo on an old computer. |

I wouldn't use Gentoo on something so old; compiling will take forever. _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

Definitely Gentoo isn't the best choice for such machines unless you compile packages on some other computer and then emerge --usepkgonly <package>
But IMO it isn't worth troubling. If I were you, I'd stay with damn small linux. _________________ The clock is ticking, brothers and sisters, counting down to Armageddon. |

I would suggest: http://www.pclinuxos.com/news.php
Use bigdaddy.
This livecd is great. You have everything on it. Even Pysol, the best cards game collection ever. Get it, burn it and try it out. If you like it, you can then put it on your harddrive. |

speak or read English. |
