I bought a widescreen monitor about 3 months ago now, and I have had the worst time ridding myself of the black bars at the top and bottom of a movie. Some movies work, others don't. I believe this is from the aspect ratio that the movie is on the disc. Movie's sold as "widescreen" work only half the time. I have a Samsung SyncMaster225BW at it's native resolution : 1680X1050; which has the aspect ratio of 16X10. mPlayer does not support this aspect ratio as far as I know. I followed http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Widescreen_Resolutions_(WSXGA) with little success. VLC seems to have more options... but cannot get the results that I want, or at least assume should be there.
Sorry for the lack of information, this sort of thing is new to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

16x9 is 1.78 to 1 aspect. 16x10 is (of course) 1.6 to 1 aspect. Check the listed aspect (if any) on the DVD case. Any movie whose aspect ratio is higher than 1.6 or 1.78 to 1 will have to be framed when it is played back. (assuming no pan&scan or such) _________________
