With cvs versions of libdrm, dri and mesa xorg session switching hangs (dri enabled and works) - just like with proprietary ATI driver.. this is sad...

Yes but not always. And I think that with cvs r300 it's a bit more stable.

Yes, with ATI-Proprietary it crashes *always*. With open r300 I've only tried 2 times = 2 crashes.

I need session switching because I share my workstation with wife.

@lowtraxx: Please do not post such long logs, it's a bit annoying. You should better use a pastin/nopaste service, thanks.
Could you please nopaste
Code:
LIBGL_DEBUG=1 glxinfo
Did you do eselect openg set x11-xorg?

I have had that same problem I had to make symlinks for the r300_dri module.
May not be the same problem, just an educated guess.
Code:

ln /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/r300_dri.so

These actually are no errors I think. Does glxgears work fast enough?

I get around 2800 fps in glxgears

but i am more concerned about the GLxBadContextTag error. Anyone knows where this comes from?

Wine craps out with the following:
Code:
X Error of failed request:  GLXBadContextTag
  Major opcode of failed request:  143 (GLX)
  Minor opcode of failed request:  5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
  Serial number of failed request:  25
  Current serial number in output stream:  25

Composite disabled.

Hi every body !

I just tested open driver r300 and I am quite happy with it. I tried aixgl with compiz too : it works but it is very slow compared with a configuration like Xgl+fglrx : is it normal ?
I have a second small question : I emerged mesa and libdrm from cvs, is it interesting to use xorg-server from cvs or is it risky ? What is the advantage ? performance ?

Thank you !

I would stay with 7.1 (xorg-server 1.1.1) as there are no major improvements. However you should keep an eye out for xf86-video-ati updates. This will most likely have speed improvements and bug fixes for r300.

The biggest improvements can only be done in Mesa so this is THE package to get from cvs :D

Euh... I don't know exactly how it works... Why is xf86-video-ati necessary ? What is the link between mesa xorg and xf86-video-ati ?
Thanks for your quick answers !

the drm and radeon kernel modules provide low level hardware access
xf86-video-ati is the glue between xorg-server and the hardware
Mesa is the opengl implementation which provided the hardware acceleration.

It is a bit more complicated and someone else can probably do a better job describing it :D

Ok thank you very much !

In fact, beryl+aiglx+r300 works fine on my computer but only scrolling (in any window) is very very slow : it is a pity because it makes beryl nearly unusable... Does anybody know if it is a beryl or a r300 bug ? how can I make beryl run quicker ? (sorry I hope I am not OFF...)

I'm and a friend of mine has exactly the same problem. Upgrading to all 9999 packages might help. What versions are you using now?

@Maintainer of the r300 overlay:

You should upgrade the ebuild of xorg-server-9999, it needs the patch from here to compile fine.

Furthermore:
Code:

 * git update start -->
 *    repository: git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/mesa/drm
 *    local clone: /tmp/PORTAGE/distfiles/git-src/drm
 *    committish: master
*** git-tar-tree is now deprecated.
*** Running git-archive instead.
*** 'git-archive' '--format=tar' 'master'

So you should update the git ebuild class I think.

So again what versions where you using when you had that slow scrolling problem?

I'm coming across two errors in the overlay:

The xorg-server-9999 ebuild has been fixed. I removed the xorg-conf-example.patch as it has been merged upstream. I added the Mesa mipmap patch several days back.

I am not going to fix the git.eclass issue at the moment. See Gentoo Bugzilla Bug 152615 for an explanation. I actually ended up removing the eclass directory altogether since git.eclass has finally been merged into Portage.

As for the xf86-video-ati-9999, it compiles fine here. I'm not sure what your issue may be. You can still fall back to xf86-video-ati-6.6.3 if the latest git master changes end up breaking things.

For future reference, if anyone comes across any errors with the overlay, please check to see if you have the latest version. If you're not using Rsync, be sure to delete the old overlay directories before extracting the latest tarball. I don't post every update I make to the overlay here (or anywhere for that matter ;)).

Enjoy.
