RESTORE_ON_START="yes"
SAVE_ON_STOP="yes"

You need the init script found in alsa-utils.

Run
Code:
emerge alsa-utils

and add alsasound to you system startup using
Code:
rc-update add alsasound default

That should fix your problem

I like aumix better, until the alsasound init script gets fixed, that is.

Code:
# emerge aumix
# aumix -S
# rc-update add aumix default

I just did the above after reading the Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide

I had to recompile my kernel to include only sound support and no built-in alsa support.

maybe that's something you could try too.
