I 'm having trouble loading my nvidia.o module - its not recognizing the card. This is the error I'm getting -

My cat /proc/pci reports this:

Which is crazy b/c even though is reports that agp is disabled on my board - I can boot into windows xp and use my agp slot w/o a problem

I have tried loading up the nvidia module w/ agpgart kerneled, then moduled, then disabled.. nothing has changed the fact that my "device cannot be found"

Please help, will send millions of dollars to person who fixes this problem

For a million $ I'll give it a try...though I dont think I can come up with something u dont allready know :)

1.
Remove all references to Nvidia u might have in kernel.
Compile kernel with "modules modules_install"
Code:

make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install

2.
Emerge nvidia-glx

3.
Emerge nvidia-kernel

4.
Check that u uncomment "Load glx" in XF86config (section Module)
Check that change driver from "nvidia" to "nv" in XF86config (section Device)
Check that NVdriver is in your "/etc/modules.autoload"

?

Why it says that you have S3 Trio graphics card? Do you have two cards at same time? If so and you have nvidia card in agp slot, go to bios and set AGP bus as primary for VGA, or something like that.

Supermule:
When I try to load the module I get a device not found error

Tojo:
That's a good question. I don't know why it says I have an S3 Trio. Perhaps something got detected wrong in the kernel?

I'm looking through my /proc/pci and my dmesg and notice that some of my hardware isn't correct - notably:

1) Intel Mboard 440BX - My chipset?
Sandra Sisoft says that my board and chipset are

Mainboard
Manufacturer : Intel Corporation
Model : D845EBT

Chipset
Model : Intel Corporation 82845E Brookdale Host-Hub Interface Bridge (E0 Step)

2) No sound card listed at all!
I have a SB Live! Drive that works fine in WinXP

3) Video card (as noted before) is not a S3 Trio but a GeforeTi4200

Is there a way to manually select devices?

Try having a look at the chips on the mobo to check the chipset version, and a good look through the bios for any strange settings it may be on

Well, the fact WindowsXP boots and things work is not really relevant here. Linux boots as well and if the AGP slot was not functioning, you would not be able to look at the screen right? In the Windows device manager, your telling me under video it says nothing about S3 and lists a functioning nvidia card?

I think the advice others have given is sound advice.

1. check your Bios for video settings and make sure a. AGP slot is enabled and b. any onboard video cards are disasbled. This is important.

2. If the kernel says you have an S3, most likely somewhere in your box you have an S3 video card. The kernel gets that vendor information right out of the video bios so...you have an S3 card someplace.

3. Your kernel is most likely configured wrong.

Under "Character Devices", you need:
<*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
[*] Intel 440LX/BX/GX and I815/I820/I830M/I830MP/I840/I845/I850/I860 support

AND make sure to disable all Direct Rendering Manager stuff and uncheck all the DRM drivers below that.

Also, look at the back of your machine. VGA cards have a 15 pin female connector. (3 rows of 5 holes). How many of those type of connectors do you have on the back of your machine?
