I need some help. I dont know how to re-encode a .vob file to a .avi. Does anyone out there have any suggestions or a manual i can take a look at?

emerge mplayer with the 'encode' use flag (and other codecs you want to use, stick with the defaults if you're not sure and you'll be fine), and then just read up on any guides that mention 'mencoder', that's what you'll use to re-encode stuff.

well, latest release of avidemux did hit portage, so really - best choice. and it has a nice GUI!

I'd say avidemux is way overkill for just encoding stuff. It's meant as a video editor, primarily, and isn't going to throw verbose warnings when encoding goes wrong.
