|
|
Guys (and girls) - is it possible to use the infrared port of a Dell Lattitude running Gentoo and connect to a Windows-based laptop with an Infrared port in order to transfer files? I'm thinking along the lines of using Samba but over IR instead of Ethernet.
Or any alternative ideas appreciated... (maybe just burning a CD )

While, possible, I have no idea how to get the IR ports to work 'Windows' style, i.e. where you can just drag'n'drop files to send them.
However, IR ports are basically COM-style serial ports, and should react the same way.
I once transferred a patch from one Win95 laptop to another over the IR port using HyperTerminal and ZModem, so in theory all you need is something like HyperTerminal (Free) on the Windows box and an equivalent BBS-type terminal program in Linux (Does anyone know of one?? It's the one thing I've *never* seen!), then somehow get the IR ports to talk to each other...
Another way is to use PPP - If you can setup a Linux PPP server and attach it to the IR port, you could 'dial in' to it via the IR port of the other machine and then it would function as a (painfully slow) TCP/IP connection
What? *How* do you do this?
I... err.... LOOK BEHIND YOU!! A THREE HEADED BADGER! *runs* |
