Scanner

My parents have a scanner (the HP Scanjet 4850) and I'd like to move them over to Linux so I can troubleshoot their problems remotely. However, that scanner is required. So is there some way to get the scanner to work under Linux, or is it possible to run WinXP in a VM and access the scanner from that Windows?

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like SANE supports it. I have no idea about a VM...
