hey

i have a compaq presario with a AMD-K6 3D 500MHz
it will not even boot from the cd
i get to the boot: section
i have tried "gentoo" it gets into gentoo.igz and reboots
i have tried "gentoo-nofb and it seems to get past that to READY and reboots
i have tried "gentoo noapic acpi=off" it gets into gentoo.igz and reboots (suggestion from a thread)

i am running memtest86 now
it shows me there is 376M 122MB/s
the 376 M sounds like a mix of chips to me

i will open the box when memtest86 is done

i also have another 500MHz but it is a PIII coppermine it works flawlessly

now the knoppix 5.1.1 will get me all the way into the system
on the AMD box but i have no mouse

the machine was a friends and i loaded win xp on it for him about a year ago
xp works flawlessly (as far as xp goes) though it is reeeeeeeeally slow

any ideas that may help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
lance

Does the CD you are trying to boot have i686 in its name ?

Your PIII is i686 compatible, but your AMD-K6 is only i586 compatible, which means you should use the x86 CD instead.
