I have the problem of firewire becoming eth0. Lots of threads mention that this can be easily fixed be disabling firewire, however fails to mention explicitly how to do that. And well, i'm still learning the basics of the system so I have no clue... (I know there are other ways to solve this, but this should be the simplest and best since I never use firewire anyway).

Manually compile your kernel and leave out support for firewire. Or try to find which, if any, blacklist files in /etc will prevent the firewire modules from being loaded.

If you REALLY don't need firewire, just don't load the module, AND disable coldplugging in /etc/conf.d/rc.

In case you do need firewire (I, for instance do need it for hard drives - it's like a few classes faster than USB2), I suggest you check over your network and firewire kernel config. Maybe something is switched on or loaded that shouldn't be.

There's somewhere a thread about making UDEV name your devices with more "meaningful" names. And in the latest version at least, you can configure it very easily, so, for instance your firewire gets the name "net.frwr" or "net.ieee1394"

Thanks!

I have read the guide about renaming the devices... it got me a bit confused, and I thought the easiest way would be to just disable firewire. And well, since I really don't need firewire...

If I would compile my kernel without firewire support, will I see my current settings as default? That way I could just leave all the other settings and only change the one I need(less risk of messing things up).

Otherwise, how do I "just don't load the module"? :D

I read the HOWTO on compiling the kernel manually. That looked pretty easy and I don't mind a newer kernel, so why not upgrade.

I thought it all went pretty well, untill actually compiling the kernel. As with just about everything I have tried to do with Gentoo I get errors(usually internal compiler error: segmentation fault). I like how Gentoo is built up, but I really can't get anything done, so I guess enough is enough...

Anyway, thanks for your help, it's really appreciated.
