I did a search but couldn't track down a post of this already, so I apologize if this is a repost.
On alsamixer, Headphone has an OO beneath it unless I mute it. Master, no matter what I do, stays empty. No OO even when Headphone is muted. I get the impression it should say OO down there.
So I tried plugging in headphones.......nothing through them either. PCM is also unmuted. Any idea how I can turn Master on?

when something is unmuted, it should say OO, yes. however when you un/plug headphones it should make no visible change to alsamixer. through the hardware, sounds get piped directly to the audio ports, and have no mechanism to turn them off or on from the hardware side.
is it possible you have the wrong driver installed? or maybe you have one of those cards that has some options you need to set for modprobe/udev.
hope this points you in the right direction.

Hmmm........I tracked down this:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/Emu10k1&printable=yes
I am using an Audigy 2 Value, but I have no idea what to do with that .diff file that's supposed to be the patch... NOr do I know if it's relevant since it's from 2005. I'm pretty sure emu10k1 is the right driver for my card. |

Solved.
It was running digital, which was muted. Unmuted that, works fine. |
