I recently performed a " emerge -uDn world " a few weeks back since first installing gentoo on my box. Everything went smooth with the exception of xserver not working properly, my box not being able to shut down unless I do a hard shutdown, etc. About two days ago , I noticed my internet was sluggish, and paid no attention to it, figured there was something wrong with ISP provider. After two days, Im no concerned. A little bit of information, I have a cable DSL provided by comcast, which connects to a wireless netwear router which has a network cable connected to my gentoo box( no wireless adapter yet ). I remember during installation tinkering with the /etc/hosts file and adding one extra line as instructed in the gentoo handbook. well today, i took a look at the same file and a whole bunch of lines are there that i dont recognize. here is my /etc/hosts

mappings for the TCP/IP subsystem. It is mostly
# used at boot time, when no name servers are running.
# On small systems, this file can be used instead of a
# "named" name server. Just add the names, addresses
# and any aliases to this file...
# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/hosts,v 1.8 2003/08/04 20:12:25 azarah Exp $
#

127.0.0.1 tux.homenetwork tux localhost ===> ( i remember adding this line )
10.10.10.1 pitr-int
10.10.10.2 dustpuppy-int
10.10.10.3 poseidon-int
134.68.220.30 toucan
# IPV6 versions of localhost and co
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

/etc/conf.d/net

# This blank configuration will automatically use DHCP for any net.*
# scripts in /etc/init.d. To create a more complete configuration,
# please review /etc/conf.d/net.example and save your configuration
# in /etc/conf.d/net (this file :]!).

config_eth0=( "dhcp" )
dhcp_eth0="nodns nontp nonis"

im also using WAP security with my router. Any ideas what those extra lines represent??? thanks in advance.

I don't know anything about that file, but do you have your router access secured? I mean, maybe someone is stealing Internet connection from you and that's why it's being slow
