Batch Image Processing - Get Rid of Black Borders

Hi,

Would it be possible to use imagemagick (gimp - is it useable from shell scripts?) to automatically delete black borders from an images? The black borders arise from the source of the scanned image: Some copies out of an old book; the paper format in the copying machine wasn't adjusted well, such that the images have a black border.
