Just as one of our "l33tites", I don't really like the nomenclature. Maybe it's a response to the h4X0r crap, but I'm just trying to quietly post my way back to a respectable [in my mind] nomenclature. Is there any chance we could get this changed? I know of at least one other 'l33t dude' that doesn't like it for the same reason.
What do we think? |

i don't like being l33t either ...i mean, it's ok to be a veteran or even better a tux's little helper, but l33t just doesn't fit in IMHO
maybe if you become l33t with your 1337th post and loose it with your 1338th? ...that could be fun :]
p.s. i'm gonna change my signature now _________________ tea+free software+law=hook

I think its supposed to be taken with a pinch of salt, its not implying you are a l33t h4x0r dUd3.. but merely taking the piss out of the l33t h4x0r dUd3 people... if you get what I mean.
I have nothing against it being changed though _________________ a.k.a port001

I know -- it's very much tongue-in-cheek.
My opposition is more of a picky little thing -- I guess "don't mind making fun of it as long as it doesn't point at me..." |

No promises that it will change, but do you have any suggestions for a replacement? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

How about Wizard? (Or, for Terry Pratchet fans, Wizzard)?
At one time wizard meant more or less the same as hacker ... until those not-very-elite skript kiddies (and the media) corrupted the meaning of hacker <sigh>. |

Understood.
Two ideas -- one with a wider effect area
1. Swap "Guru" with "l33t." l33t is somewhat associated with adolesence, and the 4th (guru) nomenclature is kind of an adolesence -- not quite up there in posts, but definitely not a n00b
2. Maybe "torvaldian" or "kernel_op" or something. I don't know, I was kinda hoping someone more creative than I would come up with a brilliant idea that I could just leech off of. |

I think it would make more sence for the ranks to go
n00b
Tux's lil' helper
apprentice
l33t
veteran
guru
although I think l33t should be replaced with something better (however I have no idea what that might be), but what do I know I'm only an apprentice .
Although at the end of the day the ranks mean nothing, for instance I am sure there are n00bs who know much more than some of the veterans. |

Yes, ranks have nothing to do with knowledge -- I just... I don't know. Just don't like l33t. It's certainly livable, but also changeable. |

Perhaps I'm a little late to the party, but I also like Torvaldian. Another thing to keep in mind is that we could add a higher rank than Veteran. A lot of people have achieved the 1000 post mark and might be interested in having something to shoot for again. There's nothing to say that we have to remain at a total of six ranks, but keep in mind that there would have to be pretty sufficient support for any change to take place. I'm from Indiana and we're conservative, crusty and change resistant. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

I also have a dislike for geek-bonics, so I'd like to see n00b and l33t go away. More than just replacing them though, I'd like to see titles that don't evoke skill or knowledge. While torvaldian might be good, I think it also seems more skill oriented.
Here are a few that I'm leaning towards:- emergent : n00b
(other suggestions: dabbler, dillettante)
- no change : Tux's little helper
(unless we change Tux to something Gentoo)
- ? : Apprentice
- Advocate : Guru
- ? : l33t
- no change : Veteran

Hardly late -- nothing really good gets done right away, does it?
I really like pjp's "emergent" replacement for "n00b"; kinda took me a moment to recognize the nod to portage, but I like! I understand shying away from skill-oriented rankings, but our current rating system still does somewhat infer skill. We all know good advice when we see it, whether coming from someone named n00b or veteran, and we also know bad advice coming from the same.
I know all about you Indiana folk -- I'm from a vacation area in MO and you all and those from Iowa make our summers... memorable. Maybe you're "conservative, crusty, and change-resistant" at home, but certainly not here. |

Dump the rankings alltogether: they're useless.

&DLet's color-code:
- White
- Red
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Black
No skills involved. I got the idea from the AD spell Chromatic Orb, you can cast a different colored orb with different increasingly dramatic effects if your charachter has an higher level. _________________ I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. |

I agree. Rankings encourage people to post abusively. Plus the fact that I'm using Gentoo for almost 6 months now, yet I am still ranked as a 'n00b' because I only frequent the forum occasionnaly is starting to annoy me! |

IntergalacticWalrus wrote: | I agree. Rankings encourage people to post abusively. | Well, I certainly don't think we want to encourage people to post abusively, but we would like to encourage people to post. Thus, I think moving away from skill-oriented ranks to something more for fun would be a good idea. I'm not sure that I would say every poster is the same because I think there are many, uh, intersting people here.
I also don't know that I like the idea of custom titles unless it was something that you earned after a relatively large number of posts and even then my crusty, change-resistance seems to make me lean against it. I have been on forums before where everyone had a custom title and it seemed distracting from the main point of the forum.
As for what ranks to use, I'm not sure. I would like something that's not skill oriented, but almost everything that I come up with seems to be somewhat skill oriented. Here are two penguin oriented options:
- Adelie
- Magellanic
- Royal
- King
- Emporer
- Gentoo
- Egg
- Chick
- Juvenile
- Adult
- Moulting
- Gentoo
Certainly the second list has more structure to it than the first, but they are both meant to relate to penguins somehow. It's a thought and I just thought I would toss it out there. _________________ if i never try anything, i never learn anything..

'Larry's little helper' ?
'Larry the cow's little helper' is a bit too long imo. |
