Hello dear users

I have done a fresh install yesterday on my gentoo and today i am planning to install a desktop environment. My question is if i t is possible for me to install a desktop environment without any other following material. For example if i install kde it will pprobably also install konqueror and amarok.
Can i just install only the desktop enviroment and from then on try to install he programms manually?

By the way i am thinking of installing xfce?do you recommend?why?why not?

Have a nice day

Hi,

First question: Yes.
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-split-ebuilds.xml

Second question: You will not get a good answer for this question. Everyone has their own taste.
You have to install xfce to feel how it feels.

XFCE is a great choice, there's also gnome-light builds you can use that install barebones gnome, and as previously mentioned, the kde split ebuilds.

Xfce is light from the start.
If you want light, you can try fluxbox. It is even lighter.

Dear users i wanted to ask you a simple question.
after this first installation through the handbook is it recommended that i install a desktop environment like xfce as it is described in the gentoo wiki or are there things that i should do first that should be done

Do according to the different wikis.

Also make sure to install kdm, gdm or some other manager that makes it easier to switch the desktop environment.

kdm and gdm are able to start every DE/WM. :)

Yes,true. If you install a DE/WM it will install xorg-x11 as dependency, but you have to configure it.You should firstly read this:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
and than run "emerge -av xorg-x11"

I don t want to become boring or tiring

I will surely read this file that you told me and i ll surely do all these things that you just said because anyway i am really following the directions of the handbook
however
i need your opinion though if i also need to do the stuff about migrating and porting to the X modular that are said in the handbook right before how to configure the x server

and i also repeat something that you didn t answer to me.
can t i install xfce without messing with kde or gnome?

Not on a fresh install. Set INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse" and VIDEO_CARDS="vesa XXX" where XXX is according to your card eg ati. Then emerge xorg-x11. Read up on that first tho and ask on irc (irc.freenode.org #gentoo) if you're unsure.

You can ignore the porting-migrating-to-modular-X-stuff.Installing a new Xorg will install only the modular X.The migrating instructions are out-of-date.

There is no xfce4-light ebuild however, xfce4 has a minimal USE flag.

You can. But if you want to try some different environments gdm or kdm makes life easier when you want to switch between them.
