|

hey, after that comparison of kernel-mods, I tried the winner: emission-sources and came LOVE them...
that was about 6 months ago... and the latest version is still 2.6.18.... wtf....
is there gonna be another release?
If not... What else should I use (yes, I know this has been asked everywhere...). I used beyond before and liked them too.
for some reason MM-sources either dont boot, or my usb-ports just dont work... randomly... ?! |

but on your link it says "beyond" would be the choice as it's the one emission merged into.... why viper and not beyond? |

Vipernicus stopped working for beyond. _________________ System: predatorbox

I won't lie, the real question is: Which placebo has features you like more? _________________ System: predatorbox

viper-sources can acheive lower latencies than beyond-sources
Edit: predatorfreak called me out on this one, because i didn't answer your question. The question is, what is "faster"? Do you want more throughput? Do you want lower latencies? Do you want more interactivity?
If you want lower latencies, you can choose viper and select RSDL cpu scheduler and preempt-rcu.
If you want better throughput, you can choose viper ingosched or nicksched (with higher timeslice) adaptive readahead and no preempt.
Quick Comparison:
viper:
CPU Scheduler: Ingosched, Staircase, RSDL, Ingosched LL, Nicksched, SPA, Zaphod
Extras: Preempt-RCU (lower latenies), Adaptive Readahead (better throughput), additional drivers
beyond:
CPU Scheduler: Staircase
Extras: drivers _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

thank you!
I dont really know what you mean by "latencies", but I guess it's the time delay between e.g. right-clicking and the apparation of the menu. So that's what I'm gonna try
emerging viper-sources using layman custom-kernels right now....
edit: what about skunk and no-sources? no appears to have a lot of patches as well, I dunno about skunk.... |

skunk and no use -mm as a base, which is a set of patches (few thousand) that are "in development" by kernel developers. -mm can house new drivers, or changes in drivers. Sometimes the new drivers don't work completely, and sometimes changes in the kernel code can cause other things to break. Sometimes new patches to -mm can yield faster performance in some areas.
Usually with -viper, I borrow some patches from -mm, but I'd never use it as a whole.
Out of the two though, I'd recommend skunk, since he's implemented splitsched (same as in -viper), and I can attest to it's stability at least. _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

so if I want a good desktop system with high responsivness, which should I choose? there is no RSDL in the list....
Code: | 1. Ingo Low Latency CPU scheduler (CPUSCHED_INGO_LL) (NEW)
> 2. Nicksched CPU scheduler (CPUSCHED_NICK) (NEW)
3. SPA CPU scheduler (no frills) (CPUSCHED_SPA_NF) (NEW)
4. SPA CPU scheduler (work station) (CPUSCHED_SPA_WS) (NEW)
5. SPA CPU scheduler (server) (CPUSCHED_SPA_SVR) (NEW)
6. SPA CPU scheduler (entitlement based) (CPUSCHED_SPA_EBS) (NEW)
7. Zaphod CPU scheduler (CPUSCHED_ZAPHOD) (NEW)
