Sound f*cked up after recording

I wanted to record some sounds the system was playing. I launched (Gnome's?) Sound Recorder app and chose "Mix" as the source to record. Since then output quality sucks. It's as if "Mix" is still "active" somehow cause when I crank up the PCM slider in the Volume Control application, the problem gets worse and I hear feedback squeaks. It is not a microphone feedback problem though, I'm listening through headphones. It's as if I'm hearing all audio "double" (not at low PCM settings, I guess the "interference"/"feedback" is not big enough then).

Any ideas? Any configs/info I should post?
