|
|
Hi all,
This is the last post from me for today. Sorry for the flood, but I (have permission) to work on the install only once per week.
The "8.b. Networking Information" section of the Install Handbook gives a lot of hints, unfortunatelly, not good enough for dumb 'ol me. As I mentioned before, I am using Knoppix to kick-start my machine. I assumed that I could simply copy /etc/conf.d/net from Knoppix into my /mnt/gentoo/etc/conf.d; unfortunatelly Knoppix does not have a conf.d. Could anyone give me a pointer as to what do I copy out of Knoppix in order to make this work?
For right now, I am doing this on a pretty easy environment: everything is automatic, DHCP, nothing blocked. But I will be doing this again on a machine that even Knoppix cannot auto-detect; the end result will be on a machine that is connected via ADSL, and in Knoppix I have to run the ADSL/PPPOE Configuration tool in order to get it to connect to the Internet.
Where do I look, and what do I tell Gentoo?
Thanx.

as far as i know knoppix it is using a completely different configuration mechanism than gentoo.
therefore you will not be able to use your knoppix network config in a gentoo environment, sorry. |

But I should be able to at least use it for hints, or am I wrong? Unfortunately I have no idea what to look for or where to look. If anyone were at least willing to give me a starting nudge, I will go through it all and then write up some sort of WiKi / HowTo / thingie. |

Just in case anyone is reading this...
Now that I am emerging world, I have some time to flip through the rest of the manual. I found all my answers: in chapter "3.c. Manual Network Configuration" of the Gentoo Handbook. Kick-starting my machine with Knoppix I had completely skipped this chapter the first time through.
RTFM and then ask, right? |

There's also /etc/conf.d/net.example, which gives all the options you'll want/need, especially on the ADSL machine. For a normal machine just using DHCP, a blank config works fine, as DHCP is the default. _________________ Ex-Gentoo Developer

in other words, a good file to copy over into /etc/conf.d/net would be /dev/null _________________ Configuring a Firewall? Try my iptables configuration

No problem, since this is a Gentoo forum and we are in the same boat, it's ok and also normal for someone who start using Gentoo.
Also, i'm sure that if we were in a Debian forum, I think that you could have win a RTFM catch phrase |
