Ubuntu has a nice OSD for brightness and volume.

I googled and it is said that it comes with the gnome-settings-daemon (gnome-control-center) and automatically shows up when you have composite enabled.
So i enabled composite but it still doesn't show up.
Does anyone know how to do this? |

Yes, I have the OSD with gnome-2.18. It is shown when I press a key assigned to one of volume control's settings.
Are you running a compositing manager? |

I have composite enabled in the xorg.conf and in my window-manager (xfwm4).
There is no use-flag you need or something like that? |

Not that I know off.
I'm running compiz in a gnome environment, if that helps. I guess you're running xfce's application for controlling hotkeys, which would explain the OSD not showing up. |

Scrap that.
xfce-base/xfwm4 has an xcomposite USE-flag; try setting it. |

It is still not really clear to me whether you're actually running gnome with xfwm4 or xfce with gnome just being installed. If the latter, try running /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon and see if it changes anything. |

Im using Gnome with xfwm4, but its the same with Metacity.
Btw. do you get the Brightness OSD too? I have read somewhere that this only appears with xfwm4. |
