Hello world

Murphy must really hate me : what have I done ??

3 days ago, I had a problem with my computer : it seems that a serial port on my mother board died (here came murphy for the first time).

Afterwards, I changed my hard drive port, chroot livecd (I have acces to my hard drive's data, / and /home).

I've rebuild my whole system, and at boot time, I get those errors : http://home.fser.info/error-sata.log

I couldnt write it so I had a look on my logs and could see that it wasnt the first time I had this error.
But today, I have exactly the same error in my monitoring tty while boot (steps : starting network filesystem (ssooooo loooong) and starting gdm (more and more longer, so that I had to reboot on livecd).

What shall I do ?

Thanks

What kernel? How long has this box been running, if at all?

Could be one of two things:

1) Get ready to buy another motherboard!

or

2) Are you sure you have the proper drivers built for your SATA chipset?

Motherboards are kind of like cars - you can repair them and hang on to them for as long as possible, but eventually, they're just going to nickel-n-dime you to death. Always have a spare mobo. They're on the cheap.

Thanks for your answer :)
I'm currently under a 2.6.19-r...

The box is under gentoo since the 25th november 2k6 and have been perfectly stable.

For the driver .. I really dunno, but it used to work for monthes ...
Remember that I have access on my hard drive.

(One day I'll have to post to ask why gentoo doesnt want to "read" (I mean there is only sdb in /dev) an other sata disk whereas an ubuntu live cd wants ...
Yes maybe it could be a clue, that's why I'm speaking about this here).

Cheers.

Be careful here - just because a system *appears* to be running 100%, that doesn't mean that there isn't underlying heat/CPU/etc problems. Check your logs daily - be pro-active about looking for errors and stuff. I have a script that runs about every hour that does a mini-report of my system and it wraps it up and emails it to me. Some would think this is a little excessive, but it's saved me literally hundreds of dollars in hardware.

In any case, it sounds like your mother board is ready to go - first it will be the serial ports, then slowly but surely, other stuff will go. Try some hdparm tests on your drive, measure some I/O, test it against what the drive *should* be running at, assuming you have the proper drivers built in. If you start seeing more I/O errors/etc in dmesg, you should consider a new board.

Sympathetic considering the price of my mb ... :)

I often look my logs at.
Gonna try hdparms and other IO tests then edit this post.
