Ok I'm a noob. I'm trying to install Gentoo and not having good luck. Do I have to partition my hard drive before installing Gentoo?

you need to follow the Gentoo Guide as it will explain everything and show you what needs to be done,.. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook
