|
|
This is my first post so apologies for any glaring faux pas (including spelling of foreign phrases). I have searched forums for "live cd problems", "x problems" and "x gdm glx" but find nothing applicable to my problem.
I run Ubuntu 6.10 on my computer and thought I would have a play around with gentoo (just for fun so not too big a deal if i can't solve this). I downloaded the live cd 2006.1. The cd works boots successfully on my laptop (so i know its not a faulty cd) but refuses to do so on my destop computer (which is running ubuntu, so i know the hardware works with linux....)
However when i boot the cd on my pc (desktop) it fails to initialise "gdm". I found this out by choosing boot option "gentoo nox" This allows the pc to boot to a command line and i can see option to type "gdm" to initialise the x server. this fails (unfortunately I can not post the outputs as i just have a command line and no internet). I have tried running "/etc/X11/xinit" (from memory) but this too fails.
Anybody got an ideas how to proceed from here.
Many thanks

Moved from Desktop Environments to Installing Gentoo.
If you don't mind installing Gentoo manually, you can use any livecd (or even from within your existing Ubuntu installation) to install it.
Otherwise, you could always wait a few more weeks, as 2007.0 is due out soon. _________________ www.gentoo.org.au || #gentoo-au |

Honestly, you'll have a very hard time with Gentoo if you're not comfortable/willing to jump into the command line. Gentoo generally doesn't have graphical tools for doing configuration. _________________ Ex-Gentoo Developer
