|
|
I'm trying to install XGL, and it was apparently removed from Portage due to some sort of bug. Without the ability to emerge it, my only option is to download the source from freedesktop.org's CVS repository, but I have no idea how to use CVS, and have no intention of looking through a book's worth of documentation just to find out how to download a few files. Is there any other way to get XGL? Is there some site out there with an ebuild file of it or something? Or can you at least give me the command used to download the source with CVS? Please help!

Why xgl?? I'd say Xorgs native aiglx or Nvidia's own composite extensions if you have a Nvidia card.
Google: aiglx vs xgl
Check here for nvidia: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=14
edit: btw check xeffects overlay for svn (very-current/live) beryl (>compiz in my opinion) and xgl if you really want it.
Xgl is crap IMHO.

Yes, but neither of those support my video card. I have an ATI Radeon X300 with fglrx drivers, and on the wiki page for AIGLX it says:
ATI: Radeon 9500 through X850 (r300 and r400 generations) - Open source drivers only.
By that I assume it means that the proprietary fglrx drivers won't work. I suppose I could try it, but I may end up breaking my xorg installation and having to reinstall everything... |

I have the xeffects overlay installed, and emerge -av xgl still tells me that there are no ebuilds to satisfy it.
Edit: Well, I don't know if I really did. I used a program called "layman" to install it according to the wiki entry on installing XGL, and I don't know if that actually installed the overlay. However, I don't know how to install it normally.

Code: | mammoth700 ~ # layman -l
* xeffects [Subversion] (source: svn://svn.gentoo-xeffects....)
mammoth700 ~ # emerge -p xgl
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "xgl" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- x11-base/xgl-0.0.1_pre20070105 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
- x11-base/xgl-0.0.1_pre20061108 (masked by: ~x86 keyword)
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man page or
refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Maybe resync: layman -S
or add:
source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf
to your make.conf
edit: from above... did you do "layman -a xeffects"? and add the source line in your make.conf? |

THAT was my problem! I forgot to add the line to make.conf! Thanks for the help! Now I only hope XGL doesn't end up being as terrible as you say it is... Just my luck that I happen to have the one kind of Radeon that isn't supported... |

Nah its not so terrible... especially not anymore. I just think its a little silly, with aiglx (a more integrated approach) being around, or nvidia's own implementation. Xgl is perfect for 3d accel cards that do not support aiglx/direct composite extensions, which is kinda what it was designed for. |
