Hi, I have a problem where my desktop has disappeared and i'm not quite sure how to get it back.
I.e: http://mortar.customer.netspace.net.au/desktop.png
The Gnome splash screen comes up, but doesn't disappear unless you click on it, and I can't see any icons or interact with the desktop in any way.

Open up a terminal (or switch to the console by hitting CTRL+ALT+F1 if you can't interact with Gnome at all), then run revdep-rebuild. This happens when an update got botched somehow (usually by being incomplete - some packages got updated but those that depend on them did not). In particular, make sure you rebuild nautilus (do this manually if revdep-rebuild doesn't do it for you. Run revdep rebuild -a to see what packages will be rebuilt.)
It may also help to emerge --sync && emerge -uDa world. _________________ "If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?" --Thomas Jefferson

I'd already tried emerge --sync && emerge world -avuDN but this didn't present any relevant packages to update. So after being fed up without a desktop for the last month I removed all the .gnome and other relevant directories and that didn't do much apart from take all my toolbar customization away.
emerging nautilus && emerge -uDa world worked perfectly! Thank you so much! |

I'm glad that it worked, but you should still probably run revdep-rebuild to see if anything else is broken in a less obvious way. (It's a part of the gentoolkit package, in case you don't have it installed.) _________________ "If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy?" --Thomas Jefferson

Sorry yes - I forgot to mention, I had run that also a week ago, installed everything listed, and it still didn't fix the problem or ask to reinstall nautilus. |
