I am trying to get KDE to work so that when I insert a removable device, it appears on my desktop. This feature works fine for cdroms/dvdroms but NOT usb drives. If I open konqueror and go to "media:/", my usb device never shows up. If I understand correctly, this is a kioslaves issue?

And here's everything you need to know (I hope):
  • I have read the FAQs, guides, howtos, and forum posts, so don't tell me to go read them :)
  • I have udev, dbus, hal and pmount
  • I have the correct fstab entry for my usb drive, and can mount it manually
  • I am in the plugdev group.
  • I use autofs, but disabled it in case this was interfering
  • I have not tried ivman. If I understand correctly, this is not needed.

EDIT: I think this is a hal problem. When I run 'hal-device' I do not see my usb device anywhere.

SOLVED!

I upgraded from 0.5.7.1-r3 (amd64) to 0.5.7.1-r5 (~amd64) version of hal, and it started working. Then I downgraded back to the amd64 version and it still works!
