Ok, *fedora* has gnome 2.18 before we do. What is going on here? I find it hard to believe that there are any glaring bugs if fedora released 7 including them. |

Ehm... that wouldn't work for 2.18.x since the xine backend has been removed. See this.
IOW, no, it's not possible anymore. |

sure, it's possible...
Code: | cp /usr/portage/gnome-base/gnome/gnome-2.18.0.ebuild /usr/local/portage/gnome-base/gnome/
vi /usr/local/portage/gnome-base/gnome/gnome-2.18.0.ebuild
modify the ebuild to depend on >=>=media-video/totem-2.16.0 instead of >=>=media-video/totem-2.16.0
ebuild /usr/local/portage/gnome-base/gnome/gnome-2.18.0.ebuild digest
emerge -pv totem
live happily ever after... |
I've been using gnome/totem like this since April 28th, and couldn't be happier. There are SEVERE issues with gstreamer as a video sink. It's complete garbage basically.
but imo, because totem is a leaf package in gnome (i.e. nothing depends on it, it's just there), there is no reason to force it's upgrade to 2.18 from 2.16.4 |

Why not just use xine-ui, mplayer, or vlc? That's what I do. Totem is trash. |

everyone has their own opinions and preferences. calling totem trash is completely uncalled for. I don't think it's trash in and of itself, the video part of gstreamer on the other hand.... |

Maybe it isn't trash, but is it useful for anything? We've had highly capable video players on free platforms for years, and having Totem installed with Gnome by default makes it look otherwise. The only formats Totem plays by default are either rarely distributed anymore (mpeg1), or inapproriate for Totem (audio). If Gnome didn't have Totem attempting to play DVDs by default, then Totem wouldn't get slammed so much, but having such a crippled player thrust into the limelight pretty much kills its image. |

I don't know what went wrong for you then, as Totem plays divx and xvid files fine here. Even the occasional wmv it can handle (not always, but still). All of this using the gstreamer backend. Do you have the ffmpeg USE flag set?
Also, I love Totem. Perhaps there are other capable media players as well, however they seem to share a common trait: their interface usually looks like it's designed by blind people. Puhleeze don't make your media player look like a friggin' dvd player (complete with a separate window for player controls <- the person who thought that up should be shot); it's lame, mkay? Please do also note that 'skins' are evil. Use my friggin' gtk theme instead.
Apart from Totem, I tend to use mplayer as well. However, I don't even bother building the gtk frontend for above reasons. |

Actually I was thinking of the Totem installed by Ubuntu, which seems to be the face of "Linux" nowadays. Nevertheless, the ffmpeg flag is off on my Totem, but I just went with the default install. I know it can probably play any codec with the proper plugin. Anyway, the mplayer GUI looks horrible, but I only learned this by mistake since I always use it from the command line. However, I like mplayer the best (command line) because there are no useless window decorations-- like feh with the "-x" option. |

Hi,
Gnome 2.18.x is unmasked, but...
somewhere in the middle of update list:
Code: | [ebuild U ] gnome-base/control-center-2.18.1 [2.16.3] USE="alsa eds esd%* gstreamer%* hal -debug" 2,100 kB |
and at the end:
Code: | [blocks B ] <gnome-base/control-center-2.17.0 (is blocking gnome-base/libgnomekbd-2.18.1) |
How come control-center-2.17.0 is blocking something if I'm upgrading from 2.16.3 to 2.18.1?

Because it's slotted:
Code: | $ grep SLOT /usr/portage/gnome-base/control-center/control-center-2.18.1.ebuild
SLOT="2" |
It looks like a horrible compromise between the slotting feature, and ensuring no old versions exist. Easy way:
Code: | emerge --unmerge control-center
emerge -uDNv world |

That says less than 2.17.0 If you have a control centre installed less than version 2.17, it wants it removed. _________________ My emerge --info
Have you run revdep-rebuild lately? It's in gentoolkit and it's worth a shot if things don't work well.

My version is 2.16.3 because 2.17.0 has never been unmasked. Anyway, modifying libgnomekbd ebuild or unmerging control-center (which is the Easy Way) did the trick. Emerging now

You usual rule of thumb is if something is blocking... just unmerge it
in this case another version of control-center exists (but isn't necessarily emerged) same rule apllies

Seems to be a Gentoo-specific problem, because these things seem to be working in Foresight Linux & Fedora 7. May be something dbus related, because the Arch ppl also had troubles with the gnome-power-manager. _________________ Las torturas mentales de la CIA |

Moved mask from main package.mask to individual alpha, arm and fbsd subprofile
package.masks.
Gnome 2.18 is unmasked for : amd64, hppa, ia64, mips, ppc, ppc64, sh, sparc and
x86
PS, Please don't hit me too hard if I've broken anything. It's my first major
unmask.

Hi,
I've just upgraded to 2.18 and now gnome-theme-manager will not start. It pops up a message that it can't find default theme's schema, and that's probably because Metacity is not installed or GConf not configured properly. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Regards - morda. |
