I agree that with so many people having it installed without major boo-boos, it should go into "testing" immediately, as that is what is actually happening with it, currently. |
- Gnome-Power-Manager Icon doesn't show up
- Printing in Evolution doesn't work
Most problems in Gnome are always very obvious, but the devs at gnome.org didn't care much about really testing with users... _________________ Just you and me strogg! |

Not really a winning trait, but that's what you get with a free lun^H^H^Hdesktop, I guess. (Not to say that QC/QA on M$ products is necessarily any better!) _________________ 0mFg, G3nt00 r0X0r$ T3h B1g!1111

Yessssssssssssss. But sometimes I think KDE and XFCE do their job more reliable.
Working with the shell in the framebuffer is the best thing: stable, fast and nearly everything runs how it should _________________ Just you and me strogg! |

if it's being held up by those issues... well, thats unfortunate. I'm not complaining though because I'd rather just unmask the stuff then be the herd maintainer. |

Does anyone know if they plan to include these Desktop Effects in the Gentoo version? _________________ • Helpful Linux Tidbits |

I think you can add the capability by editing the ebuild and providing an overlay unless there's already a flag for enabling this. _________________ 0mFg, G3nt00 r0X0r$ T3h B1g!1111

Appreciate it red, I think I'll wait before I try it though. I accidentally errorred in my post earlier. Feisty does not use the new metacity effect, but uses compiz instead. Sorry for the misinformation. _________________ • Helpful Linux Tidbits |

Can you elaborate a bit on this? I just found out that I was not running this at all until now. I did have it installed, though. _________________ 0mFg, G3nt00 r0X0r$ T3h B1g!1111

Consolekit is new in gnome 2.18. It's used by gnome to keep track of who's logged in at any given time (like what "who" shows you). |

It sure looks like it is. I ran Gnome 2.18 without it and never even noticed. I needed to unmask it during the install though because gdm claims to depend on it: Quote: | grei5003 sng # dep -L consolekit
sys-auth/consolekit:
gnome-base/gdm-2.18.1 pam? sys-auth/consolekit |

Has the Gentoo Gnome community fallen asleep???
Gnome has already reached 2.18.2, and with Gentoo (which was supposed to be bleeding edge back in the glory days) it's still 2.18.0, which is still hardmasked?
That's quite disappointing, considering new versions making the experience better.... _________________ Las torturas mentales de la CIA |

the fact you can pull it in shows GENTOO is still bleeding-edge. just cause it is masked doesn't stop it being so
sure would be nice if it went ~ARCH _________________

but you can't, I know of no gnome 2.18.2 ebuilds. portage has gnome-2.18.0.ebuild and the gnome-experimental overlay has moved onto gnome-2.19 components (and has no gnoem ebuilds what-so-ever).
you can pull in gnome 2.18.0 but not even 2.18.1 let alone 2.18.2.
http://lwn.net/Articles/236415/
to be honest, i think the gnome devs have fallen asleep. well, at least they have some sort of "tracker" bug out on bgo now:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=176517
but the two open bugs (out of four) both are for beagle and one is FreeBSD specific....
There is nothing bleeding edge about still having gnome 2.16 as the stable DE. |

Got a bit tired of waiting too for 2.18 to go stable, so tried my luck yesterday. Unmasked it, and after I prelinked it too, it loads incredibly fast. All I can say is... WOW! |

Naib, bbe & cca, you are still talking about 2.18.0, whereas 2.18.2 is the actual stable release from upstream.
Take a look at Foresight Linux, they not only have *the* next generation package management system (conary from rPath), but they also have stable packages available the day a new Gnome is released.
I was a former hardcore Gentoo user, and still use it on some of my machines, but nowadays I am pretty disappointed about the way it went, that's why I started distro-hopping on my laptop some time ago. I still have not found the perfect distribution for my needs, but about every one I tried (including Fedora, Ubuntu, Arch, Foresight) is now more up-to-date than Gentoo, which was not the case in the good old days. _________________ Las torturas mentales de la CIA |
