I'm pretty sure at this point that either I have a bad card (I bought it used from ebay and it has glitched a bit in other ways, so it is possible.) or the X server modules that ATI wrote is somehow incompatible with the xfree build I have. Any ideas on this front? What USE flags should I have to create the most "standard" X server I can? I'm using ~x86 could that cause a problem?

I'm going to rebuild xfree with the newest 4.3.0-r3 ebuild. It looks like to some patchs have been inegrated that could help. I don't know. Any ideas?

I'm using xfree-4.3.0-r3 and have been for a while, I don't think there's any compatibility issues. I'm using ~x86 too, and everything works for me. Maybe try building X with more conservative CFLAGS than usual and see if makes a difference. If you have a Windows install, try running some benchmark programs in a loop and see if the card throws up problems in that situation as well.

This can't be right...

$ glxgears
338 frames in 5.0 seconds = 67.600 FPS
376 frames in 5.0 seconds = 75.200 FPS
343 frames in 5.0 seconds = 68.600 FPS
371 frames in 5.0 seconds = 74.200 FPS

Everything runs smoothly, and most non-wine games run pretty well, but my glxgears is not working correctly :(

Here is my config and log if it helps...

Okay. I've been testing some more now.
Those settings didn't completely eliminate the problem, just made it a lot less frequent.

Seems to me that overheating could be part of the problem. Running on the lowest resolution without FSAA seems to be the most stable solution.
I don't have any exact values but it seems like opening the case and placing it near the window helps too.

I've moded my radeon 9700 pro to have one of those zalman passive coolers, it sure gets hot but the heatpipe is working alright (same temperature on both heatsinks). And it did work alright in windows.

DarkAngael, have you modded you card/ do you think it might be overheating?

The settings did nothing for me at all. My card works perfectly in windows until I install the via 4-in-1 drivers, so I am pretty sure it is an issue with either the via AGP specs, or my motherboard not implementing them correctly. Many others have had the same problem and not been able to fix it. The dmesg seems to indicate that memory allocation fails somewhere along the way.

No mods have been done to my card, it still has the same heatsink and fan on it from when I bought it.

Although my case gets really hot most of the time, if it was a heat issue then it would happen all the time, rather than only with certain drivers woudln't it? I have confirmed that windows IS using agp8x using the ATI diagnostic utility.

Either way, it'll all be fixed hopefully when I get an nforce2 board (which is all around better anyway for my system as I have 2x256 meg dimms ready for dual channel ram supported by nforce2 :D) . I really think it is a motherboard problem as many people with similar setups have similar problems, but nforce owners have far fewer problems of this nature that I have seen (it's ironic that the nvidia motherboard works best for ATI cards). I have also had issues with my motherboard not detecting my CPU properly (it's a 2400XP+ detected as a 966 MHz, that can't be right), so its possible that it's just not the best motherboard out there, or that this particular unit is faulty, but it's too late to take it back now :(

Pens, did you remember to do opengl-update ati? Sometimes we all forget to do the simple things like that. Have fun kicking yourself if I'm right lol. If not, then buggered if I know hehe.

pens, I think you've just got v-sync enabled (ie it limits your fps to the vertical refresh rate of the monitor). In your XF86Config, change the "8" in the "Capabilities" setting to a "0" and that should fix it.

Gah, I did that one too. Who would seriously wanna limit their fps to their refresh rate?

Someone who doesn't want 'tearing' (happens when frame rate > refresh rate).

I got dri working last night by
1) removing ati-agp from modules.autload and adding intel-agp
2) changing the driver in the Device section for my video card in my XF86Config from "radeon" to "ati"
3) running opengl-update xfree
Just so people running the same hardware as me can find this in a search, I use a Sony Vaio GRX 570 with a Radeon 7500 mobility video card. I didn't think to get a glxgears benchmark, but I will when I get home.

edit: 1860 range. im going to try using something more aggressive than 1 for AGPMode

Just got a 9800 to replace my ti4200. Installation went smooth, got opengl working. Few glitches in games (ET mainly) but no big deal.

Two things I have problems with:

1. When having a window maximixed (the title bar is at the very top of the screen) and I move my mouse to the top, as if I were to resize the window, the mouse does not partially go off the screen. Instead, the mouse moves down...Picture says a thousand words...

[img:38dc4c3a96]http://pages.sbcglobal.net/finbert/stupidmouse.jpg[/img:38dc4c3a96]

Mine does this only for the top, not the sides or bottom (the mouse views correctly partially off the screen).

I've tried many different driver versions, all of them resulting in the same problem. I'm currently using 3.2.8, 2.4.23 kernel, xfree 4.3.0-r3, kde 3.1.4

To make things even more interesting is I tried using the radeon driver instead of fglrx...It did not have this problem. This makes me think that its the ati-drivers problem and everyone would have this issue, but I haven't seen anyone else post about this.

2. The XV drivers dont work in video out and I have to use X11 drivers to obtain images (movies) on the tv. This is a bummer because it uses cpu usage to display the movie rather than the gpu :/

if you're using mplayer, try using -vo gl or -vo gl2

This use OpenGL to "render" videos... hehehe. I don't know how much cpu this uses, but it looks good.

I don't have the problem that you have, but I have lots of problems with Dual-Head and other things...

Please ATI... FIX DGA, XV, Dual-Head, and others....

So, DGA is universally broken in the fglrx driver? That is very sad and explains the horrable 2D performance it has. I hope it gets fixed.

I'm running 2.6.0-test11-gentoo-r2, XFree86 version: 4.3.0, ati-drivers 3.2.8 on an ASUS A7V333 mobo with a VIAKT333 chipset.
fglrx gets loaded and I am able to run glxgears aswell as fgl_glxgears.
however, the graphics are all distorted/garbled.

I have executed:

Code:
 opengl-update ati

before starting X.

Here 2 screenshots can be found:

http://pix.lordsith.net/gentoo/Screenshot.png
http://pix.lordsith.net/gentoo/Screenshot-1.png

Here is my XF86Config generated by fglrxconfig:

http://www.lordsith.net/XFree86/XF86Config

I'm hoping someone has the solution for this problem.

TIA

I'm also running on an Asus A7V333, but can't get my radeon to work at all - can you post your XF86Config? The link you have seems broken.

Thanks

edit - I just noticed too that the ATI Catalyst 3.10 driver just came out, and suspect 3.2.9 (?) of the linux version will be released next week - cool!

OK, I've been looking all over for solutions to these problems, but it doesnt seem to work.
I have a Radeon 9600, and if i ctrl-alt-f? out of X, and then back into X, the colors get all weird, like if they were inverted.
Also, I get ~150 fps when i run glxgears, which, I understand, is _way_ to low.

I had the "weird color"-problem before, and managed to solve it by accident, and don't know what I did, and when i got the 2.6 kernel, it reoccured.

I've had the same problems with colours getting screwed up before, but it doesn't seem to happen with the newer drivers. Are you using the 3.2.8 version? 150 fps is definitely too low, so that means 3D acceleration isn't working. If you're using the kernel agpgart, make sure that both AGP modules are loaded before the fglrx module (ie agpgart and nvidia-agp/via-agp/sis-agp etc).

It seems that ATI has prepared a Linux driver release. I have found it while reading the release notes for the windows version. They say something like "sorry for not releasing the linux drivers at the same time".

Any of you knows more of this?

I'll be a nice christmas gift if we could use DGA and Dual-head and even better if I can play all the screens of UT2k3 without the screens being corrupted.

ATI... are you going to surprise me these days? Please, please, please...

If any of you knows something about a release date, please post something.

Thanks!

ATI are going to be releasing Linux drivers every 2 months, and yes, there is a release scheduled for this week sometime :) No idea what kind of improvements we'll get though.

Well... i'm putting ATI linux drivers as my homepage now... I hope ATI surprise us with a release that fixes a big number or bugs... as I have buyed a high end system and linux support is very poor (lots of times worst than in windows).

I only want to pray...

I am using the latest version. Right now everything works, but it seems to be compleatly random.

After modprobeing nvidia-agp which, aparently, wasn't modprobed, i now get 1867 fps.

Now I'm confused. The weird colors came back, but they went normal when I started and closed Tuxracer.

I noticed the same thing. Starting UT2K3 was how I usually fixed it when it happened to me, but like I said before I haven't encountered it for several months now. Submit a report on the problem to ATI - http://apps.ati.com/linuxDfeedback/index.asp.

ozamosi, I have had the same problem you describes but it happened to me when I change to console and then come back to Xfree. Then the colors were very screwed and I have to restart my computer.

I hope this issue has been solved too in the new drivers...

Where did you read about this? I hope these will include speed improvements. They will be 3.2.9, right?

I just got my Radeon 9500 pro from ati yesterday, and I was surprised that ET went so slow (around 20fps sometimes.) Is this normal?
