hey when i ran Xf86 config i chose the radeon card and X started fine and kde looks nice, but i dont think i have REAL ati drivers with 3d aclleration setup do i? i try to run 3d games and they say they cant locate the opengl subsystem, and opengl right?

Is your Radeon higher than 9200? If so, emerge ati-drivers. If it's 9200 or lower, emerge xfree-drm. (You can do ati-drivers for any r200 chipset Radeon, but xfree-drm is open source and therefore good.)

I recently posted a link to a howto on getting xfree-drm working (see about 5 posts up). With ati-drivers, once they're emerged you run fglrxconfig. Make sure you have your kernel configured correctly either way.

It's based on the 7500. I recommend xfree-drm.

Yes try emerging xfree-drm also you might want to do opengl-update xfree if you haven't done so already. KDE btw isn't 3d and has absolutely nothing to do with 3d either so KDE will run just fine if you don't have opengl support.

I disabled DRI/DRM in the kernel and enabled AGPGART (I think I got the right chipset, I'm using i875)

here's what I'm getting:

No 1 you MUST be sure of the AGP chipset!! You should know this if you built the comp urself

No 2. it looks like its trying to load ATI Fire GL DRM kernel module, is this what you setup with fglx config?

Knowing the answer to these questions will most likely answer your questions.

I am sure of the Chipset, it's i875 Canterwood. It's just this isn't listed in the menuconfig. I guess it's too new.

Anyway I managed to fix it, I changed the agpgart to a module and then set the module to autoload with parameter agp_try_unsupported=1
All working now with a GLXgears score of about 4700

Things might work a little better if you set the Bus ID to be 1:0:0 initially, I believe it's in Section "Device" of XF86Config. Your best bet for AGP chipset would probably be the Intel 440LX/BX/GX and I815/I820/I830M/I830MP/I840/I845/I850/I860 etc. since that's your chipset series, I didn't look to see if that's what you set.

After a little more research, I found that as well. But here's a quote on driver progress as of March:
Quote:
Just to let everyone know, there is an ATI developer working with the XFree86 team to write an accelerated driver for the U1/3*0M chips. So far, it's working pretty well. They still need to fix some bugs in the 2D acceleration and then begin work taking advantage of the 3D acceleration. But it is promising!

Ahh, finally got the dreaded nforce2/radeon combo working...sorta.

I patched the kernel agpgart with the nforce2 patch, emerged ati-drivers, switched opengl to use ati, loaded fglrx.o, used fglrx for the card driver in XF86Config-4 and had it use external agpgart. (I have a patch that adds nforce2 support into ati-drivers, but I have no idea how to apply it)

Now, startx brings up a screen that's really messed up (sort of like tv static) but I can see the bash prompts, type, and move the mouse around. glxinfo does list hardware acceleration enabled. If I kill X, and restart it, the monitor goes completely blank.

Thanks for any advice.

what are all these USE flags ?
I don't seem to find them in /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc
aren't all flags supposed to be listed here ?

$ emerge -pv xfree-drm

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] x11-base/xfree-drm-4.3.0 [4.3.0-r1] -3dfx -gamma -i8x0 -matrox -rage128 -radeon -sis

this is package specified use flags.

You can also find short descriptions of them in /usr/portage/profiles/use.local.desc :)

hmm, ok, thanks :-)
last time I checked, there was like one or two things, so I forgot about it ;-)

but, are these flags somehow special ? can I use them exactly like normal flags, or I should use them the way they're described in local.desc :
x11-base/xfree-drm:radeon ?

thanks

All you need to do is add radeon to your USE flags. The other ones will then automatically be left out.

When setting USE flags, it's easiest to do 'emerge -pv {target}' and it will tell you what flags it's going to use. Then just adjust the ones that it's getting wrong by default before doing the emerge for real.

Hello everyone,

I have followed the directions in this sticky and am able to startx, I get a black screen with a small X that I can move around. When I left click I get a menu but the problem I am having is I cant close X with ctrl+alt+backspace. The only way I can close it is by left clicking and then choosing the exit option.

When I exit X I get this error message:(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0x48000000,0x2000000)

When I do lsmod Radeon is running but it is not being used by anything. When I boot radeon is not autoloaded? I'm also not sure if my agpgart is running?

If agpgart is a module then what does the output say? Is it autoloaded? If it's in the kernel, do
Code:
dmesg | grep -i agp

Thanks for the reply, agpgart is in the kernel.
When I typed dmesg | grep -i agp I got this message:

Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M
agpgart: Detected Intel i845 chipset
agpgart: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0x60000000

Check your log for all error messages. They often give good clues what the problem may be, beyond the single error message you get at quitting X.
Code:
# grep -e EE -e WW /var/log/XFree86.0.log

Spyderous: here is what that command gave me....

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)
(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(WW) RADEON(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0x48000000,0x2000000)

Any ideas?

Would you like to see my XF86Config ?

Ok..first of all..thanks to all for the great posts..i have finally gotten my radeon working in x with GL support.

Now...everything seems to work great glxgears is giving me 2339fps, the GL screensavers work great, tuxracer works excellent, but some of my games won't run at anything higher than 640x480. When i try to change the resolution it craps out and leaves me sitting in a 640x480 desktop !?!?

Any ideas?

The game doing it the most is Vendetta.

Help :?

hi, i've followed the various directions in this thread but i'm still having trouble. here's roughly what i did. i have a radeon 9700 pro running on an intel 865.

1) compiled 2.4.20 kernel without DRM and DRI _but_ with AGPGART and MTTR. i built them into the kernel, not modules.

2) emerged ati-drivers and ran fglrxconfig

i checked over the generated XF86Config-4 and it includes the lines:

Code:
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
...
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"

but when i startx, i get:

Code:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found
(EE) fglrx(0): board is third party board
(EE) fglrx(0): [agp] unable to acquire AGP, error "xf86_ENODEV"
(EE) fglrx(0): cannot init AGP

so i guess my question is why is it looking at PCI:1:0:1 even though XF86Config has PCI:1:0:0? and i don't know what the deal is with the AGP, didn't do that until just now. thx.
